An action without a plan is random and won’t get you anywhere. It’s like driving a car but not knowing where to go. There’s no sense of direction. You can’t make consistent meaningful progress. On the other hand a plan without an action is useless wishful thinking. There’s a huge difference between knowing and doing. Knowledge isn’t power, it’s potential power. Make a decision… Change your life.
The potent combination of action guided by a well thought-out plan is unbeatable. This assumes that you as a person are unbeatable. Why? Because failure is a part of life. It’s inevitable. There are things you will put a lot of time and effort into, and they won’t pan out as you’d hoped. However, if you are so passionate about what you’re doing that you’re willing to learn from your mistakes and continue trying, eventually you will succeed. You only fail when you stop trying; when you give up. You want to be successful? Here are the keys to the kingdom on a silver platter:
1) Ask yourself, “what do I want from my life/career/relationship, etc?” Be SPECIFIC. Being vague here will make this exercise useless and only hurt YOU! Write it down. Ex: “I want to be happy” tells you nothing. What does it take for you to be happy? How would you know if you had it? Whatever you want, be as specific as possible.
2) What are the habits that I currently am doing each and every day that’s holding me back from getting what I want? Be honest with yourself! Write it down.
3) What are the habits that I must adopt and apply each and every day to make my goals a reality? Write it down.
4) Do the things from #3 every single day whether you feel like it or not. Stop doing the things from #2 immediately.
5) As you adopt new habits take a look at your life and see if your plan is coming to fruition before you. If not, change the habits and try new things. Be flexible with yourself and always check to see what’s working. Breaking old habits is great, but if your new ones aren’t moving you forward than you’re standing still. As long as you’re honest with yourself, kicking harmful habits and adopting healthful ones, frequently checking on your progress, and setting minor goals on route to your ultimate goal, then everything will work out.
6) Repeat until goal is obtained.
As simple as all of this sounds, the vast majority of people will never do it. Too many people want a better life, but aren’t willing to do what it takes to get it. The fact that you’re reading this means you’re different. You’re in the minority of people who are creators of circumstance, not creatures of circumstance. As one of my mentors, Les Brown, put it, “You don’t have to be great to get started but you have to get started to be great.” As the old saying goes, there’s no time like the present. Let me know about your progress!
