One of the most overused excuses is “I don’t have enough to time.” Every morning we wake up and are given 24 hours to spend however we see fit. You must realize that nobody has more time than you. Stop blaming a lack of time for your shortcomings and start accepting the fact that you aren’t being as productive, resourceful, and practical as you are capable of being. Successful people manage their time more effectively. They get more done in less time. Start asking yourself “how can I make time for this?” instead of constantly asking “do I have time for this?” This subtle change in language has a massive effect on your subconscious mind. The former assumes you have the time and simply need to structure your day, while the latter is a yes or no question. The scary thing about the second question is the majority of people answer “no” to it even though it’s obvious (from an outsider’s perspective) that they clearly have the time.
There’s never enough time to do everything, but there’s always enough time to do the most important thing. Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, succinctly states, ‘put first things first.’ You have to learn to prioritize your life. Not everything that comes your way needs a lot of time allotted to it. This is how the downward spiral tends to happen: people have a few important things that need to get taken care of, numerous unimportant/non-urgent tasks show up, all of the tasks are treated equally, and in the end the important tasks never get done. Sound familiar? We have all gone through this at some time in our life; however, those that find a way out of this ‘no-time loop’ enjoy lives of productivity and success. What’s their secret?
Here is the routine that many highly successful people follow each and every day which they say makes them successful. Every night before going to bed they write down all of the tasks they want to complete the following day. Then they rank the tasks in order of importance. Upon rising they immediately begin working on the most important thing first. Successful people know that everything may not get done, but as long as the most critical tasks are completed everything will be ok. These people also group things together when possible (keep in mind multitasking isn’t always beneficial). Going for a walk? Listen to an audiobook while you exercise. Now you are improving your mind and your body at the same time, and the time you would have spent listening to that audiobook can be spent doing something else.
You also must look internally and ask yourself key questions. Who are you spending your time with? Are they contributing towards your goals? You become the people you spend the most time with. As Dan Peña (‘The 50 Billion Dollar Man’) says, “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” Are you spending time with passionate, driven people who are making their dreams come true? Or are you waisting away your nights and weekends talking about what you will do, but never taking any action? These aren’t easy questions to ask, but if you’re honest with yourself your life will improve drastically.
Truly realize the value of your time. Each second that passes is a moment you will never get back. Quit thinking that you will live forever. We all come into this world, and we will all leave it. When will your time be? Nobody knows. You may die tomorrow. You may live until you’re 110. Are you really willing to risk it? Live every day as if it was your last and discover what is truly important to you. If you keep putting things off until tomorrow one day tomorrow will never come. Do something today your future self will thank you for, and start making your dreams a reality. Your time is limited. Never waist a minute of it. Live with purpose and decide how your life is going to be.
