When you read the title of this post what followed it in your mind? More than likely it was the phrase “try, try, and try again.” Sadly this statement has been overused to the extent that it’s meaning, to the majority of the population, has been lost. If you take away anything from this writing please let it be this:
You Are Powerful Beyond Measure.
Within each of us lies the potential for greatness in some capacity. The only thing that can truly defeat you and put an end to your dreams is you. Far too often people give up on the 1 yard line. They choose to focus on how far they have left to go instead of how far they’ve come. Once you commit yourself to something you want to do, you must anticipate failure. Failure is a part of life. There isn’t a single person who has lived that avoided failure. Albert Einstein said “show me a person who hasn’t failed and I’ll show you a person who never tried anything.” Failure is a beautiful thing. It serves as an opportunity to learn from your mistakes and make a better decision next time.
Stop thinking about outcomes as either win or lose, and start seeing life as win or learn.
You only lose when you give up. How does a baby learn to walk? Does it just stand up one day and decide to go out for a sprint? No, it gets up and falls repeatedly without losing any enthusiasm. The baby doesn’t know what failure is; it simply keeps trying. Before you know it the baby is doing some type of Frankenstein-shuffle walk but it’s happy because at least it’s upright. Finally, the art of walking is mastered and the child can move on to the next obstacle life has in store for it.
Without a doubt you’ve heard the expressions “if it was easy everyone would do it” and “nothing that’s worth doing is easy.” What makes people think that they must be perfect at something on the first try? This expectation acts like a poison for the mind.
Expecting success when you have yet to put in the work is like taking an exam in a language you know nothing about and expecting to do well.
Seems like common sense when you’re reading this doesn’t it? Ask yourself, “when was the last time I gave up on something I wanted because it was hard?” Be honest and you will see that anyone can fall prey to this way of thinking if they aren’t careful. I remember when I decided to purchase my first guitar. I was blown away by the passion and beautiful feelings of peace, presence, and intense euphoria music was able to invoke. I watched guitarists create what I could only describe at the time as magic. I instantly said “I want to do that.” Like most new musicians, I got my instrument and had a smile on my face from ear to ear. That smile quickly dissipated when I started to play. It was miserable. My fingers hurt, the guitar sounded horrible, and I quickly became discouraged. A part of me honestly expected to be able to play like a rockstar within a week or so of practicing. At that moment I had two options: decide that I wasn’t good at the guitar and give up, or choose to commit myself and improve little by little each day. I’m happy to say that I chose the latter and, while I’m not a guitar-master by any stretch of the word, I’m much better than when I first began. The longer I play the better I’ll get. Life works the same way.
Live, Learn, Adapt, Win, Repeat.
The formula for success is simple but it’s not easy. You have to be mentally tough. Perseverance is the quality of champions. In business it’s been said that 97% of the people who quit too soon are employed by the 3% who never gave up. Hopefully all of these examples are coming together into an obnoxiously loud and clear declaration that YOU are the only thing standing in your way. Work hard at your craft, learn and grow from failure, be creative, and commit to never give up no matter what.
Life is what we make of it. Don’t allow temporary pain to take away a lifetime of potential joy. What if Elvis Presley got his guitar and decided music wasn’t for him after a day of frustration? What if Michael Jordan decided that basketball should only be a hobby after not making his high school team? The outcome of your life is determined by the decisions you make. One decision can take your life in an entirely different direction. As I said in the beginning, you have greatness within you, but it’s up to you to bring it out. It’s not always a straight forward process. You have to put effort in to dig it up. Whenever you want to quit think about what/who you’re doing it for and that will give you the strength to push forward. You will fall. There will be times when you won’t want to get back up. It’s hard; easy is not an option. However, there’s one thing I can promise you… it’s worth it.
