2019 is just around the corner, and with it comes your next opportunity to create the life you and your family deserve.
The questions you may be asking are, “but how do I do it?” “what should I focus on?” Rest assured. I’ve got you covered.
Here’s what typically happens as the new year approaches.
- People get excited for the new opportunities the new year brings
- They set goals and new years resolutions
- They enthusiastically begin
- Two weeks into January the majority of people have severely lost momentum
- Life remains mostly the same
You don’t want this for yourself. I don’t want this for you. So let’s do something about it.
Here are five simple steps you need to focus on to make next year, and every year after for that matter, more successful than ever before.
First – Know Your Outcome:
In order to get what you want, you must first know what you want. Sounds simple right? Think about it though. How many times have you asked someone what they want, and they really haven’t given it much thought? How many times have you been that person? Most of us focus on what we don’t want.
We don’t want to be in pain anymore.
We don’t want to be broke financially.
We don’t want to be fighting in our relationships.
We don’t want our business to struggle.
As the old saying goes: Where focus goes, energy flows. When you focus on what you don’t want, interestingly enough, you typically get more of it.
So let’s try something different. What do you want? Get extremely clear, and be as specific as you possibly can.
I love to relate this to the concept of a navigation system. What are the two most important pieces of information for the system to know?
- Where you are right now
- Where you want to go.
Get crystal clear on these points and you’re well on your way to creating the life you desire.
Now we need to identify…
Second – Why Do You Want It?
Why is it important?
Why does it matter?
What are all of your reasons for doing what you do?
The philosopher Nietzsche said:
“if you know the why for living, you can bear almost any how”
The line of life has its ups and downs. Most people seem to desire a flat-line life at the peak of the mountain, while avoiding the valley below. But just like in medicine, nobody wants a flat-line. It’s the ups and downs that make life exciting, that allow us to learn and grow, and that gives us a deep appreciation for the life that we live.
When (notice I didn’t say ‘if’) you have your setbacks, when you’re disappointed, when life doesn’t go according to plan, when you get knocked down and feel like you want to give up…
What are your reasons that will get you back up, and help you push onwards in the face of adversity? Those reasons are very important.
Write down why you want it, who you’re doing it for, why it matters, and why you MUST succeed. Then review your list every day and night before you go to sleep and right after you wake up.
This puts you in the correct frame of mind to…
Third – Determine What Actions To Take and What People To Reach Out To
Know this and know it well:
Information without implementation is useless.
If you aren’t consistently taking the right actions that lead you to your desired goal, than you will never arrive and stay there. Period. You might get lucky for a moment, but the success I assume you’re looking for, success that has longevity, comes from consistent right action.
So, what actions can you take today to move closer towards your goals and dreams?
Just start. Get momentum. Ask yourself, “what’s the smallest step in the right direction I can take? Who can I reach out to who can help me with this?”
Now stop whatever you’re doing currently, and go take that step.
So many people know WHAT they think they need to do, but they never actually GET UP and DO IT. For the sake of your goals and dreams, don’t be one of those people.
I can hear you now saying, “Dr. J don’t worry. I’m not one of those people.”
To that I say: Prove It.
Actions speak louder than words, and the greatest testament to your determination to reach your goals is the action you’re consistently willing to take to make them real.
Of course, purposeful action can be a wonderful thing. Without the next step though, you’ll never know how effective the actions you’re taking actually are. That’s why it’s so important for you to…
Fourth – Measure What Matters:
How will you know when you get there?
What are your benchmarks towards success that let you know you’re making meaningful progress?
Is it a certain amount of income generated monthly? Is it more quality time with your family and loved ones? Is it seeing consistent improvements in your blood-work at the doctor’s office? Restful hours of sleep? Improved energy?
Whatever it looks like for you, make sure you have a way to assess whether or not you’re moving in the right direction. It can be very easy to take misguided action that’s actually moving you farther away from where you want to be.
Here’s a simple yet powerful question to ask yourself:
Am I being productive or just busy?
By measuring what matters, course-correcting when you’re off the path, and consistently taking right action, the odds of you achieving what you set out to accomplish dramatically improve.
Only one question remains…
Fifth – What’s Next?
What will you do once you arrive?
Nothing in nature is stagnant. Everything is either growing or it’s dying.
We set our sights on ambitious targets, then we become the type of person who can live that type of life. We rise to the occasion. Once we’ve arrived however, it’s easy for life to seem stagnant if we don’t continue to learn, grow, and contribute.
So what’s next for you? What does your life look like at the next level in your health, your relationships, and your business?
Once you’ve answered this question, you now have your Map of Success.
You know:
- Your Outcome: What you want
- Your Reasons: Why you want it/why it’s important/why it matters
- Your Game-Plan: The actions you must take and the people you’ll reach out to
- Your Metrics: How you will evaluate your progress
- Your Next Steps: What you will do once you arrive
So, what should you do now?
Remember what I said earlier: Information without implementation is useless. I find that most people know what to do, but they struggle with being accountable to themselves, they struggle with information overload, and they struggle with consistency.
Most people dabble and live in the land of maybe and someday, and then they wonder why they never live the life they’re capable of living.
The most successful people in the world all share one thing in common.
They made a decision to be successful.
They committed to the process, and they worked with a professional to get their desired results exponentially faster, rather than doing it alone, experiencing trial and error, and making many mistakes that will cost them money, energy, and years of their life.
It comes down to this: Twenty years from now will arrive, that’s not the question. The question is, where will you be? If this is resonating with you, it’s for a reason. This is your defining moment. It’s your time.
