When my clients hire me to help increase their level of success and grow their business, one of the many strategies we utilize is the process called reverse engineering. As the old saying goes, “start with the end in mind.”
At its core, reverse engineering is going into the future to discover what you want to be/do/and have, and then reversing the process to see what steps need to be taken along the way to achieve that goal.
Imagine this: You have an idea in your mind of what you want your business and life to look like in a year. Often times though what you say you want to create and experience is big picture and it’s not specific. You’re working hard, not seeing much results, and you aren’t sure if you’re going to hit your goal until the end of the year. This typically leads to confusion, frustration, and discouragement at your lack of progress. “Why isn’t this working?” you may be asking yourself at this point.
Here’s the process for how we would reverse engineer your goal using a hypothetical business example:
- Find out exactly what you want to do, who you want to be, and where you want to be one year from now and be as specific as possible.
For example: In twelve months, my business will be operating in 10 or more countries, making me $450,000 per year, impacting hundreds/thousands of people per month with my products and services, and I’m going to be physically in shape, healthy, and happy.
Now at first, this yearly goal may be intimidating and seem overwhelming. Let’s keep going
2. Next, discover what you would need to be doing at six months to be on track to achieving that goal.
For example: In six months, my business will be operating in 4-5 or more countries, on track to reach $225,000, impacting hundreds of people per month with my products and services, and I’m going to be exercising daily, going to bed early every night, eating healthy foods, and spending more time with my family and friends.
3. Ask yourself again, where would I need to be at three months to be on track to hit my six-month goal?
For example: In three months, my business will be operating in 2-3 or more countries, on track to reach $112,500, impacting at least 100 people per month with my products and services, and I’m going to be running three days per week and weight-lifting three days per week, going to bed at 10pm every night, eating foods that are in alignment with my health goals, and consistently scheduling time with my partner and family
4. Once more, where would I need to be at one month to be on track for my quarterly goal?
In 1 month, my business will be operating in 1-2 or more countries, on track to reach $37,500, impacting 50 or more people per month with my products and services, I’m going to be running three days per week and weight-lifting 3 days per week, going to bed at 10pm every night and waking up at 5:30am, eating one large salad per day and fresh organic foods that are in alignment with my health goals, scheduling one date night per week with my partner, and seeing friends and family two days per week.
Finally: Install the daily and weekly habits and actions in order to reach your monthly goal.
Ask yourself questions such as:
How many people do I need to call every day?
How many products do I need to sell every day?
What time do I need to go to bed and wake up?
What time will I schedule for my family and friends?
Will I cook, meal prep, hire a personal chef, etc?
What types of exercises will I do?
Once you begin implementing this strategy, at the end of every week do a weekly review/check-in to ensure that you’re doing everything you need to be doing to be on track to hit your monthly goal.
The beauty of this system, once created, is it allows you to focus solely on your daily actions. If you’re doing what you need to be doing every day, then you’ll hit your weekly goal, which will lead to your monthly, quarterly, six-month, and twelve-month goals being accomplished.
This system removes much of the guess-work out of your business and life. You won’t have to wait until the end of the year to know whether or not you’ll reach your goal. You’ll know after a few days if you’re doing what it takes or not.
Implement this process into your business and life fully over the next 90 days, commit to taking the necessary actions on a consistent basis, and watch your results become more predictable and the life you want to live begin to manifest.
